In light of COPPA 2.0 compliance, it is good to know that not only are Web site and online service providers doing what they can to comply and protect the younger generation, but it seems that Apple is doing what they can to help streamline the use of curriculum-based applications to engage them.

Advancements in technology have enabled teachers new ways to engage and interact with their pupils every year. It's no surprise that students excel with a more dynamic interface to demonstrate concepts, assign projects and assess progress, compared to the traditional text based syllabus and grading methods. However, the issue remains, if an application is purchased and deployed on the institute’s devices, can faculty, students and parents still utilize the same application from their personal devices (without paying)?

Mobile device management (MDM), issuing and managing purchased app licenses as well as single sign on makes iOS 7 that much more enticing for education.

1. My child-directed Web site does not collect any personal information. Do I still need to post a privacy policy online?

No.  However, the FTC recommends that all Web sites/services directed to children – post privacy policies online so visitors can easily learn about the operator’s information practices.

2. What information must I include in my online privacy policy?

While the original Rule required operators to provide extensive categories of information in their online privacy notices, the amended Rule now takes a shorter, more streamlined approach... Under the amended Rule, the online notice must state the following three categories of information:

1. How does the FTC enforce the Rule?

For information on COPPA enforcement, click on the Case Highlights link in the FTC's Business Center. Parents, consumer groups, industry members, and others that believe an operator is violating COPPA may submit complaints to the FTC through the FTC’s Web site, www.ftc.gov, or toll free number, (877) FTC-HELP.

2. What are the penalties for violating the Rule?

Operators who are in violation of the Rule for civil penalties are liable up to $16,000 per violation. Potential factors the court may assess: how bad the violation, previous violations, the number of children involved, the amount and type of personal information collected, how the personal information was used, was it shared with third parties and the size of the company.

8. What should I do if I have a complaint about someone violating the COPPA Rule?

You may fill out a complaint form online at Consumer Complaint? Report it to the FTC.  You also may call our toll free telephone number, (877) FTC-HELP, to submit your complaint to a live operator.

9. What types of online services does COPPA apply to?

Services that allow users to play online games, social networks, purchasing goods or services online, online advertisements, or interactions with other online content and services. Mobile applications that connect to the internet and geolocation based applications are also online services covered by COPPA
